Overweight and obesity are a growing phenomenon in western countries and their frequency is increasing, currently constituting a true epidemic and one of the most frequent emerging public health problems. As an example, in the United States, one in two people is overweight and one in four is obese. In Europe the obese population is between 13 and 23%. In Spain, 16% of the population is obese, according to the Obesity Statistics carried out by the European Institute of Obesity (IMEO). The same study indicates that, in our country, one in two people is above their ideal weight. Likewise, 10% of children are obese and 20% are overweight; according to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
Obesity is a factor that facilitates the appearance of many other diseases such as adult diabetes, high blood pressure, many cases of lipid disorders, sleep apnea…
Obesity is more frequent in women than in men, also in adults and people with sedentary habits. This disease is associated with a cut in seven or eight years in life expectancy. It is also the cause of approximately 75% of new cases of adult diabetes and 25% of deaths from coronary heart disease.
The main factors favoring the current obesity epidemic are excessive calorie intake and a very low expense in the form of physical activity both at work and in leisure time.
