Tinnitus is to hear sounds that are not heard from outside. Tinnitus can sound in many different ways, but the most common is noise and high beeps. It is estimated that 15 percent of American suffer from some form of tinnitus, with approximately 100,000 having severe tinnitus that severely affect their everyday lives. However, most people can live as usual. Tinnitus usually gets better over time, but there is no scientifically proven cure.
Why does tinnitus occur
Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom. More than half of those seeking help have a hearing loss. Sometimes tinnitus can start in conjunction with a temporary hearing injury such as a noise injury, but it can also occur for other reasons:
• Physical causes such as improper bite, tight jaw muscles or neck and shoulder problems.
Different types of tinnitus
There are three types of tinnitus that can be distinguished.
It is hearing-related, bodily as well as depression and anxiety-related tinnitus.
• Hearing-related tinnitus – depends on damage to the hearing system.
• Physical tinnitus – depends on bodily injury. There is also a connection between bite and jaw problems and tinnitus.
• Fatigue-related tinnitus – There is a strong relationship between severe tinnitus and stress.
Common symptoms of tinnitus
Tinnitus is when you hear sounds that have no known sound source. Tinnitus can sound in many ways but the most common is noise and high beeping tones. Tinnitus can also lead to other problems such as:
• Disturbed night’s sleep
• Disrupted ability to concentrate
• Fatigue and depression
Diagnosis of tinnitus
Tinnitus cannot be measured by objective measurement methods. Therefore, those with tinnitus can describe their problems themselves. Often, questionnaires are used that address various issues such as how often you experience problems, how tinnitus affects one’s everyday life, work, concentration ability, night sleep etc.
Treatment for tinnitus
Tinnitus sounds can be treated in many different ways. It is often more than one reason behind the inconvenience and therefore it is important to get an individual assessment.
Tinnitus can often be investigated and treated at a health center. Sometimes a referral to a hearing care clinic is needed.
