What Is Menopause? (April 1, 2020)

Menopause is also called menopause. It is the time of life when the period ends. During menopause, the hormonal balance changes dramatically in the body. Some may feel bad, while others feel as usual or better than before.

Menopause – the last people

Menopause usually lasts from a year before the last period and a few years thereafter.

The last period is called the menopause. According to the studies that have been done in USA, the menopause occurs on average at the age of 51, but it is common to have its last period from 40 to 57 years of age. On average, smokers get their last period two years earlier than those who do not smoke.

The egg laying ends

The ovaries then contain a large amount of immature eggs, so-called ovaries. Some of them mature into eggs that can be fertilized. The egg layers gradually disappear and the menopause is due to the absence of egg layers.

The amount of estrogen decreases

The amount of estrogen in the body varies during life. Before puberty, the levels are very low. After the first period, approximately 40 years follow with high levels of estrogen. Thereafter, the level of estrogen decreases and stays at a constant low level about five years after the menopause.

Estrogen affects many organs in the body, such as the uterus, vagina, skeleton and brain.

The reduced amount of estrogen during menopause allows you to get for example

  • hot flashes
  • sweating
  • Mood swings
  • sleeping problems
  • dry and brittle mucous membranes in the vagina
  • urinary tract disorders.

These disorders are called menopausal disorders or transitional disorders.

The reduced amount of estrogen can eventually increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Menopause is experienced differently

It is very different from person to person how menopause is experienced. It can be about the physical menopausal disorders but also the emotional experience of being in a new phase in life.

Some get into trouble

It is common to have more or less menopausal symptoms for several years. You may have hot flashes and sweats, but not worse than being able to endure them. Maybe you have so much trouble that it affects your everyday life. Or you have no menopausal symptoms at all, the period just ends.

Mood swings with irritability, irritation and moodiness can affect your relationships with others.

The sex life may not work as well as before due to genital disorders or your sexual desire has decreased. If you have a partner, it is good to talk about the changes you are going through and how it feels. Maybe you can find other ways to be close.

For some, menopause coincides with having teenage children and old parents to take care of. There are also factors that can affect mood and sleep.

You can get treatment with medicines if you have a lot of trouble. There are medicines that counteract hot flashes and sweating. They help you to sleep and function normally. There are also drugs to treat dry mucous membranes of the genital area.

Menopause can bring with it many different emotions

Menopause means a change in life and it is no wonder if you have strong feelings for that change. You may feel sadness and fear before you begin to age. If you have older children, you are no longer an active parent and your role in life is not the same as before. The menses have stopped and you can no longer get pregnant. You may feel less desirable or worthless. So you shouldn’t have to. Contact a health center or gynecologic clinic if you need help managing the change that is going on in you.

Try to take care of yourself during this time. There are some things you can do yourself that can help you feel better. You can try relaxation exercises and moving around. Maybe you know someone who also goes through menopause, with whom you can exchange experiences.

Also try to accept your feelings. When you are angry, be angry. If you are sad you may need to cry. Feelings will come and go, and they are not dangerous although they can be unpleasant.

Can be a good time in life

It may also be that you experience menopause as a good time, which means a relief or a relief for you. It can feel good to no longer have PMS, menstruation and menstrual pain.

Menopause can be a time when you get the urge to think more about yourself and your personal development. You may have the opportunity to change jobs or get a new hobby.

Some feel they have better self-confidence and do not care much about what others think anymore. A feeling of being a person who is mature, attractive and with experience of life. An experience of being happy with his new self.
