The first thing to do before giving a person with cervical pain a massage is to identify the cause of the pain, and even more so if it is a child. Performing massage without being experts and knowing the anatomy could be counterproductive and in the most extreme cases, produce an injury. Only if we are very clear that the cervical pain comes from a contracture, can we try to do a light massage and put mild heat on the affected area, but if in doubt and if the pain persists it is better to go to the doctor to try to identify the cause and propose the appropriate treatment. It is important to keep in mind that a cervicalgia or cervical pain can be caused by different reasons, other than a contracture, such as an infection or trauma.
