Broken Toe Overview (March 28, 2020)

You can break the leg in a toe if you happen to hit your foot against something hard or lose something heavy on it. A broken toe usually heals by itself.

You can walk and stand as usual when you break your toe. It does not aggravate the damage, although it can hurt.

Symptoms

A broken toe can hurt, become swollen and blue. You may be in pain for a few weeks, but the swelling may be left for a long time.

When and where should I seek care?

If you think you have broken the big toe, contact a health center or on-call reception.

Most people who break any of the other toes do not need to seek care. Contact a health care center if you are very hurt or if the toe points in the wrong direction. It can be difficult to see if the toe is pointing obliquely if it is very swollen. Then you may need to be examined.

What can you do for yourself?

You usually do not need treatment when you have broken any toe other than the big toe. Therefore, you do not need to seek care even if the toe hurts or becomes swollen and blue after an injury. But you may need to relieve the pain with prescription painkillers if you are in pain.

The first few days, the toe can hurt even when you rest. When you sit, it is therefore good to have your foot high placed to reduce the swelling and thus also the pain. You can place your foot high with the help of a chair, for example.

It can hurt when you walk and you should wear spacious shoes, preferably with a hard sole. Anyone who goes to great lengths in their work may need to be on sick leave for a few days.

Influence and participate in your care

You can seek care at any health center or open specialist clinic you want throughout the country. Sometimes referral to the open specialized care is required.
