The nose consists of the nostril and cartilage, for example the nasal septum that sits between the nostrils. A broken nasal bone causes bleeding in the nasal septum and often causes the nose to become oblique. You may sometimes need surgery.
Common causes of nose injuries include bicycle accidents, sports injuries and beatings.
The following symptoms are common in nasal fractures:
- Sore throat.
- The nose is oblique or looks different.
- The nose is swollen.
- The nose is stuffy and difficult to breathe through.
- The nose is bleeding.

In a first examination, a doctor can usually determine if the nostril is broken.
Sometimes a broken nasal bone can cause bleeding in the nasal septum that needs to be corrected the same day. You will then receive an emergency referral to an ear doctor. The treatment means that you get local anesthesia and that the doctor later makes a small incision inside the nose so that the blood flows from the nasal septum.
There is a risk that the nose may become oblique if the nasal bone is broken. The doctor sometimes cannot determine if the nasal bone is broken until the swelling has subsided. Therefore, you may come back after a few days to re-examine your nose. You may need surgery if it turns out that the nostril or cartilage is broken and the nose is oblique.
An operation of a nasal fracture is usually performed under local anesthesia. The broken pieces are corrected and after the operation a plastic or plaster bandage is taped to the nose. Inside the nose you will have compresses that suck up the blood. After a few days, the compresses are removed. The bandage on the nose can stay for about a week.
Most who are operated on think that the results of the operation will be good. About half get a slightly oblique nose. Some may need to do another surgery to correct the nose.
It is common to get nasal congestion easier when the crime has healed, even if the nose is operated on.
