Are smoking cessation pharmaceuticals effective?

It is well known that smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in a very important way; so much so that smoking is the most important risk factor for this type of disease to develop.

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in developed countries. Spain has one of the highest prevalence rates in the European Community, with 27.1% of smokers among the population over sixteen. Currently, more than 60% of smokers want to quit smoking and have made some attempt to quit in the last year. Many smokers turn to manuals or books, and others do not know where to seek effective help. In the primary care consultation, the request for help to quit smoking is becoming more frequent. Among the different types of smoking cessation strategies, a classic and at the same time effective method is the treatment or replacement of nicotine with nicotine patches and candies. Let's see efficacy results of the different methods:

  • NO TREATMENT. NO HELP: From 8 to 10% they still do not smoke after a year of withdrawal, without side effects. Only the small initial withdrawal syndrome appears (headache, lack of concentration, anxiety, etc.).
  • ACUPUNCTURE: The long-term result is not demonstrated. It has no side effects.
  • HYPNOSIS: The long-term outcome is not proven. The side effects are unknown.
  • INDIVIDUAL/GROUP COUNCIL: 10% of patients do not smoke after one year. No side effects
  • LOBELINE SULFATE: Not enough information available.
  • NICOTINE SUPPLEMENTS IN THE FORM OF PATCHES, GIRLS OR CANDIES + individual advice: 18% of smokers have not returned after a year. There are 10% reactions at the local level, redness, itching. 1 to 10% suffer from insomnia, dizziness, headache, nausea.
  • All treatments and strategies should have advice from the doctor and/or nurse.
